Dog’s eye view: 3 great options for you and your pup
Hikes in the Metroplex for humans and dogs
North Texas has a ton of different activities available. You know the old saying: ‘I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!’ This is totally us! We love exploring all that Texas has to offer.
As an energetic city-living family we crave the ability to get outside and enjoy nature, leaving our busy city life behind for day. We are always looking for new, safe and fun hiking and walking trails that are dog friendly. During quarantine we’ve had the exciting opportunity to try out some new spots and we want to share our top 3 with you!
We’d love to hear your favorite hikes for you and your fur babies. Please leave us a comment and let us know which ones you love.
Top 3 FREE Hiking and Walking Trails
Best Walking Trail: River Parks in Arlington
701 NW Green Oaks Blvd
Arlington, TX 76006
1300 Acres
This park has something for everyone! Paved trails, hiking trails, boat launch options, picnic pavilions; you name it they’ve got it! We love to start on the paved trails so that the dogs get their jitters out and we can concentrate on our leash training. The hiking trails run along the river, are fully shaded and have very few people who frequent them. This is a super easy stroll with some natural scenery, or it can be a longer hike depending on what your pack needs that day.
Best Nature Hike: Getzander Park
400 S Grand Ave
Waxahachie, TX 75165
33 acres
Twin Oaks Pass is our favorite!
Only about 30 minutes from Dallas proper near the quaint town of Waxahachie this trail offers a paved loop around a well-maintained park and some incredible hiking trails. The scenery on the hiking trail includes water and numerous species of plants and trees. Not heavily trafficked and wide trails that kept us safe! The dogs LOVED the tree coverage and ability to play in the creek.
Best Off the Grid Hike/Walk: Goat Island Preserve
2800 Post Oak Rd
Hutchins, TX 75141
Trail length: 7.2 miles
348 acres
This is one of the best hidden gems we have found, thanks to our friends @packofblairs! This trail is just outside of Dallas city limits and is truly off the grid. We have yet to encounter any other humans or dogs. If you are looking for a true experience in nature, this trail is certainly something to consider. The trail itself is considerably shaded, keeping you sheltered somewhat from the hot Texas sun.
Our favorite spot is the look out where you can see for miles down the Trinity River.
